National Museum of American History

The National Museum of American History has collected and preserved more than 3 million artifacts that are relics from throughout our nation's past. The great variety in the artifacts collected not only represents a large span of time, but also a well-rounded picture of American life. The museum's exhibits do this by incorporating relics from all aspects of American life, including more than just political and military history; history of the arts, media, and music in America are also displayed at the National Museum of American History.

The American History Museum creates a great environment in which to absorb the rich story of American history. It is always being worked on and improved with the purpose of better helping visitors understand and be impacted by the richness of American history.

The Smithsonian American History Museum is located on the northwest corner of the National Mall, a few hundred yards from the Washington Monument. Just to the east of the museum you will find the Natural History Museum.

The National Museum of American History first opened in 1964, but was called the Museum of History and Technology.

On September 25, 1820 a trial was held against tomatoes, which were believed by the majority to be poisonous. Their defense was Robert Johnson, who ate a whole basket of tomatoes before the crowd at the courthouse to prove that they were harmless.
