Doors to Nowhere - US Capitol
Did you know that there are actually doors in the US Capitol Building that lead to nowhere? Well, there are and they are something to behold. In 1901 legislation was passed to help with reconstruction of the Capitol.
As the plans progressed, a sculptor named Louis Amateis began working on a set of bronze doors the the new facade which were supposed to rival those at the East Front of the building.
Unfortunately, the doors were never put in place and so they were displayed at the Smithsonian for several years until they were later placed in storage. Since 1972 the doors have been placed into service near the Crypt of the Capitol Building. They do not lead to anywhere, but they are certainly ornate and very fascinating to see.
